Several of you have been pushing me to do this Blog thing and thanks to the help of my wonderful niece Shauna, I have had this blog set up for some time. I really just needed to find something, or do something worth 'blogging' about.
The moose are old news by now (still amazing, but old news...). I thought about writing about me and Rian's C-17 ride to Travis AFB for spring break - an exciting adventure for sure; and such a joy to be with my kids for the week, enjoy visiting with friends and "thawing out" in the California sunshine. But didn't really think there was much more to say about it than that. So I was back to what do I write about....laundry, homeschooling, unpacking.... BORING!!! But finally, we did something truly Amazing... something worth blogging about!
Rick took the day off yesterday so we decided we should do something ... I voted for Walmart, but nope... the guys wanted to go explore "The Last Great Frontier." So I gathered the snacks, the hot chocolate, the cameras, grabbed my cup of tea and we headed to the Mat-Su Valley and beyond. We stopped to enjoy the beautiful Chugach Mountains along the way and then finally reached our destination; Mile 101 - The Matanuska Glacier.
The view was awesome from the Road, but we had driven to far to stop at that. After a short hike down, we found ourselves not only in view of, but actually walking on this beautiful glacier that is 'millions' of years old... okay, if you know me you know that I don't that ice is more than about 5000 yea
rs old, but still, it was amazing to see up close and personal! At some points I was a bit 'freaked out' as we crossed over areas that sounded hollow underneath our feet! But, we kept to the paths, on what we were told was 'solid ground' and after about 30 minutes we were standing at the foot of a mountain of ice, with it's jagged peaks and beautiful colors shimmering in the sun. A truly awe inspiring picture of God's creation!
Our day ended with dinner in Palmer with our friends, The Baker's. They are not only a great encouragement and a joy to be with, but are another reminder of God's care in our lives. Although sometimes Alaska seems like the end of the world to me, it is such a comfort to know that God, in His wisdom was laying 'ground work' for this assignment way back in 1999 when we enjoyed our first Thanksgiving back in England with a family that was new to the area...
